Wondering What to Send to Your Video Editor? Use This Pre-Edit Checklist

Working with a video editor can be intimidating. How can you communicate your vision to your editors, and get the final product you’ve been dreaming of? What should you give to your editor, and why? Don’t worry. Your media besties are here to break down everything you need to prepare for video editing.

Complete Checklist

Content is more than just the raw footage you’re looking to get edited. Here’s the content that you’ll need to prepare before meeting with your video editor.

Brand Guidelines

This is your rulebook of design rules for your brand. This includes brand colors, fonts, graphics, logos, and a breakdown of how your brand elements should be used.

This keeps your brand consistent across all platforms. To make sure your video matches your brand, your video editor will need your brand guidelines.

Logos and Graphics

While these are often included in your brand guidelines, they are so important we’re mentioning them again.

Make sure to include your logos (and, if you have multiple logos, which one you want featured in your video) and all relevant graphics. It’s also important to make sure they’re high-quality and the correct dimensions for your outputs.

Not sure what size your final product will be? That will be a part of the discussion when you start your side haus partnership.

Footage

While it may sound obvious, your video editor needs your footage. Don’t just share the footage that you think are the best shots. Hand over all your footage, including the bad takes and the b-roll.

The more footage that you share, the more your video editing team will have to use.

How you share your footage will depend on how big the files are. If your footage is under 200 gbs, an online sharing platform like Dropbox is a good way to send it over. If your footage is over 200 gbs, it’s better to do a drive hand-off/shipment.

Pre-Production Materials

Did you create a mood board or story board before filming? Do you have a music wishlist and a script? To make your video ideas come to life, sharing your pre-production materials gives a more holistic understanding of your project and your desired outcome.

Specific Wants And/Or Needs

Your project is about you. We don’t just want to hear about the technical details of your project. Tell us what you want your content to do. Are there specific brand needs that need to be met? Make sure your video editing partner knows everything before the editing process begins.

Final Output Requirements

To make the perfect video, we need to know what size your final product will be. If you’re not sure of the specific dimensions, think about what platforms you’re planning to publish your video on.

Not sure what size or platform? That’s okay! We can talk about your needs and determine the size in our pre-editing meeting.

Timeline and Budget

If you have a specific timeline or launch date that you’re aiming for, let us know when we start the project. It’s also important that you’re open about budget, so we can plan accordingly.
